【2021】APABI_October

Dear APABI members:

This edition of the APABI newsletter features an interview with Mongolia Banking and Finance Academy (BFA). As you know, Mongolia will be the host of next year's APABI conference, so we are all interested in the conditions there. The conference will not be held in the early part of the year; further updates will be forthcoming in due course. Meanwhile, the interview revealed BFA's challenges with the transition to online instruction. Have you been having similar experiences? The Philippines, on the other hand, also featured in a separate interview, has been coming up with creative ways to increase viewer attention. They report that their approach may outlast the pandemic.

Several important events are coming up. The 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) is taking place in October-November, after being delayed for a year due to the pandemic. At this key conference, UN member countries are expected to 'ratchet' up their climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. This will be a critical development for banks around the world, and we are keeping a keen eye on the news. Meanwhile, on a smaller scale, Taiwan's own month-long FinTech Taipei will bring together leaders and experts from all parts of the industry for discussion and exchange.

As usual, we look forward to hearing your continued updates. Please let us know if you have any items to post. Furthermore, now is a good time to start thinking about topics to cover at APABI 2022. Stay in touch!

 Regards,
 Hank C.C. Huang

Digital Inclusion Must Start with a Definition of the Problem
With the rise of central bank currencies, cryptocurrencies, and other blockchain systems around the world, governments everywhere hope not to fall behind. Excepting a few financial hubs, however, digital empowerment is not just a matter of prestige for its own sake. The immense possibilities and flexibility of digital solutions must be well understood if such tools are to be applied successfully.
